Maine’s Environment and Natural Resources Committee is holding a confirmation hearing for Darryl Brown, Governor LePage’s nominee for commissioner of Maine’s Department of Environmental Protection, as we go to air today. 2 weeks ago on Voices we reported on concerns regarding potential conflicts of interest posed by Brown’s nomination, as he is a long time developer with dealings with the department. Today we bring you some excerpts from today’s confirmation hearing, which is still in progress.</itunes:summary>

Why are some Mainers opposing the repeal of the health care law? What is the MLCV’s position on LePage’s nominations for Commissioner for the Dept. of Environmental Protection and the Department of Conservation? How does the Governor’s office respond? How can local youth get involved with others interested in poetry?

What are the details of the Representative Nutting’s over-billing of MaineCare (ie Medicaid)? Was the money ever paid back? How do his fellow legislators feel that history reflects on him as a legislator? FMI: www.pinetreewatchdog.org

For more than 20 years, the Maryann Hartman Awards have been presented at the University of Maine annually, in honor of late Professor Maryann Hartman. The awards recognize distinguished Maine women and their accomplishments in the arts, politics, business, education and community service. The intention is that the work of the women selected will provide inspiration to others and demonstrate the levels of attainment now possible for women.
The 2010 recipients, Candace Austin, Shenna Bellows and Francine Stark, were honored on Wednesday, October 27th.
Candace Austin – for her commitment to adult literacy in Penobscot and Washington Counties, as well as in Morelia, Mexico
Shenna Bellows – for her vision and leadership in the Maine Civil Liberties Union
Francine Stark – for her work against domestic violence and for her peace and justice activism
Today on Weekend Voices we bring you to the Wednesday’s event, to hear these women being honored, and to hear their own words about the work they are doing, and important issues facing Maine. This was recorded by Chris Stark. The emcee is Ann Schonberger, Director of the Women’s Studies program at the University of Maine.

On October 9th, 2010, the Peace & Justice Center of Eastern Maine held a teach-in called “Stop the Longest War: Ending the War in Afghanistan”. The keynote speaker was Jo Comerford, the Executive Director, of the National Priorities Project, a long time community organizer who has served as Director of Programs at The Food Bank of Western Massachusetts. In addition to her work there, which included a focus on food security, Jo Comerford has also directed the American Friends Service Committee’s community organizing efforts in western Massachusetts. She holds an MSW in community organizing from Hunter College School of Social Work and is an adjunct faculty member of Smith College School of Social Work.
The National Priorities Project (or NPP) where she serves as Executive Director, is a non-profit research organization that analyzes and clarifies federal data so that people can understand and influence how their tax dollars are spent. Located in Northampton, MA, since 1983, NPP focuses on the impact of federal spending and other policies at the national, state, congressional district and local levels.
WERU volunteer Steve Soucy recorded her talk at the Peace & Justice Center’s teach-in last weekend. It has been edited slighting for length. If you would like to follow along with the slides the speaker makes reference to, you can find them at the website: http://peacectr.org/wp/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/Jo-Comerford-talk-slides.pdf — but they are not crucial to understanding her presentation.

On today’s program, Meredith DeFrancesco talks with John Kerry, Director of the Governor’s Office of Energy Independence and Security about the recent New England Governor’s Resolution to promote a regional solar energy market. But first, we pick up where we left off on Saturday’s edition of Voices:
A gubernatorial candidates forum on the topic of Maine’s quality of place, was held on September 21st at the Bangor Opera House. The event was sponsored by several Maine-based nonprofit organizations, including: the Bicycle Coalition of Maine, Casco Bay Estuary Partnership, GrowSmart Maine, Healthy Community Coalition, Maine Conservation Voters Education Fund, Maine Development Foundation’s Downtown Center, Maine Downtown Coalition, Maine Farmland Trust, Maine Preservation, Maine Rural Partners, Trust for Public Land and the Small Woodland Owners Association of Maine.
The candidates for governor were asked for their views on the future, and how they would protect and promote Maine’s natural and cultural resources. Today we bring you part 2 of the forum. Part 1 aired on Weekend Voices on Saturday and is available, if you’d like to listen, on our archives at weru.org
In attendance were 4 of the 5 candidates who will be appearing on the ballot for Governor: Independents Shawn Moody, Eliot Cutler and Kevin Scott, and the Democrat, Senator Libby Mitchell; Republican Paul LePage was invited, but did not attend. The forum was emcee’d by Carol Coultas, editor of Maine Biz</itunes:summary>

The candidates for governor were asked for their views on the future, and how they would protect and promote Maine’s natural and cultural resources. We are bringing the audio from this event to you in 2 parts, so we can include as much of the forum as possible. In this first segment that you will be hearing today, the candidates were asked:
What they see as the state’s role in protecting quality of place and capitalizing on the Maine “brand” in job creation?
Their opinion regarding funds for economic development being tied to the impact the development would have on quality of place?
How would they balance public access with private landowner’s rights?
How would they encourage more “smart growth” and encourage bicycling, walking and public transportation?
And how development and job creation can be promoted, without creating
sprawl?
In attendance were 4 of the 5 candidates who will be appearing on the ballot for Governor: Democrat, Senator Libby Mitchell; and Independents Shawn Moody, Eliot Cutler and Kevin Scott, Republican Paul LePage was invited, but did not attend
The forum was emcee’d by Carol Coultas, editor of Maine Biz

An interview with John Christie, publisher and senior reporter for the Maine Center for Public Interest Reporting, a non-partisan and nonprofit journalism organization based in Hallowell. The mission of The Maine Center for Public Interest Reporting is to “ful?ll the responsibility of a free press in the American democracy by providing independent reporting to Maine citizens about their government and elections” and they aim to “fill the gap between the diminished in-depth reporting from the existing Maine media and the need of the state?s citizens to be fully informed about the actions of its government and public servants.” Their work appears in various media outlets across the state, as well as their own website, pinetreewatchdog.org
WERU is working with The Maine Center for Public Interest Reporting, to bring their stories to our listeners, in a partnership that we kicked off last month with Naomi Schalit’s report on Wind Power Legislation in Maine.
John Christie joins us on Voices today to talk about his in-depth report called: PENSIONS: THE NEXT BUDGET CRISIS which looks at the looming threat to Maine’s economy that is posed by decades of an underfunded– and over politicized– state pension system.

Segment 1: Lynne Williams on Citizens United v the Federal Election Commission, March 19, 2010 at the Blue Hill Public Library. Sponsored by the Alliance for Democracy. Attorney Lynne Williams presents the decision and outlines its implications along with possible local responses to the decision. Also features Bonnie Preston. FMI: www.corpperson.wav;
Segment 2: Earlier this week, U.S. President Obama and Russian President Russian President Dmitry Medvedev signed the START follow-on Treaty for nuclear arms reduction, but if is uncertain whether Congress will give their approval.
Nuclear arms experts Col. Richard Klass (USAF, ret.) and Dr. Ira Helfand, MD were at the University of Maine on Tuesday, speaking about the risk of a nuclear weapons attack, current nuclear weapons policy debates and treaties, and the role Maine Senators Snowe and Collins will have in the implementation of a nuclear security agenda for the twenty-first century. Dr. Helfand is a co-Founder and Past President of Physicians for Social Responsibility, and currently serves on their board of directors. He also represents PSR on the Board of PSR’s global federation, the International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War, recipient of the 1985 Nobel Peace Prize.
Colonel Richard L. Klass served in the U.S. Air Force for over 22 years, retiring in 1980, and he currently serves as Executive Director for the Veteran’s Alliance for Security and Democracy. WERU’s John Greenman recorded the talk, and today we bring you excerpts.
